About 5 years ago, I planted some bananas in my yard. I love them but they are taking over. I suspect that choppuing them down will not get rid of them. How can I get rid of them?

why would you want to !?? i live in north Queensland where cyclone ( equivalent to your tornado's ) Larry positively decimated close on 92 % of Australia's banana plantations --- sure they are recovering and we will soon have bananas on the shelf of shops at a price we can afford . but the very thought that someone would want to be rid of such a staple enjoyable fruit , is beggars belief !
the banana as a fruit and a plant is headed for a grim future ( particularly if people like you want to chop them down and be rid of them ) because they have the " unique " situation of not growing from seed --- because they can't --- they will in time become the fruit world 's "dinosaur " --- and become extinct .
but if this wonderful , nourishing , healthy piece of fruit is troubling you so much you need to be rid of it then my advice is you cut the suckers to near ground level and take a core out of the centre ( as you would an apple ) and pour a couple of teaspoons of kerosene into the hollow section you have cored out .
shame on you !!

They send out saplings from the base. You should cut the saplings off. You need to dig deep into the roots and take some of the root with the sapling. This will also allow that plant to be able to be planted separately. If you always cut them off, the banana tree does not spread. If you want you can cut off the saplings and send them to me :) ...seriously though you could ( I could use some more).

Bananas don't grow on trees, the plants have a non-woody stem.

Why not keep them and get a pet monkey instead? I'm sure it will feel right at home.

Banana plants grow from rhizomes/bulbs so your best bet is to dig them up and dispose of them. Otherwise, they'll just continue sending shoots up if all you're doing is cutting from the surface.
