Do you think Stephen Dedalus from the Portrait by James Joyce was pushed into becoming an artist by society?

I believe that Stephen was pushed into becoming an artist because he was not accepted by his family, friends, or girls. and finally when he had friends because of who he was it was when he was in college where he already proclaimed he was going to become an artist. Agree...Disagree??

I disagree. I think that he would have discovered his love for the arts regardless of what society thought of him.
