Check out:
The Quiet Earth -- the premise is that some kind of weird rip in the fabric of the universe has taken away everyone who is still alive... but the people who were in the process of dying are still left. The event, whatever it is, is going to happen again, and our heroes are trying to stop it, but don't know how. Finally, one of them decided to drive a truck full of explosives into the facility where the rip occurred, hoping to die in the attempt and therefore be saved from disappearing. Weird.

A Boy and His Dog -- Don Johnson plays a young man in a post-apocalyptic world where you can't trust anyone. He finally meets a woman (with all the suggested possibilities for "renewing humanity") but she's a pain in the a--. To make matters worse, the boy and the girl and the dog are all starving. At the end of the movie, the boy and his dog are walking away with full stomachs and the woman is nowhere to be seen.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eighth Dimension: 1984

Odd but terrific!! Starring Peter Weller John Lithgow, Ellen Barkin, Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Goldblum...

Brilliant brain surgeon Banzai just made scientific history: shifting his oscillation overthruster into mach speed, he's become the first man ever to travel to the Eighth Dimension. Dr. Lizardo has stolen his secret and is preparing to bring an alien army across the 8th Dimension, threatening the destruction of Earth.

I don't know your age or viewing tastes but some good older (and, thus, not re-treads) science fiction movies, in my opinion, are:

"Silent Running" (Bruce Dern) - The overdeveloped Earth's remaining forests are kept in space in giant domes, awaiting re-forestation.

"Forbidden Planet" (Leslie Nielson) - A scientists subconscious ego drives a deadly force on a planet.

"Logan's Run" (Michael York) - Life in a time that finds people over the age of 30 a burden on society.

"Dark Star" (Dan O'Bannon) - A very low budget film from John Carpenter's early years. Clever and funny but not visually spectacular if you prefer great special effects.
