It's been true since the baby boomers began to mature and form their much more liberal political identity (than that of previous American generations) in the 1960's. Viet Nam was obviously the first instance where this generation had a political impact on society for better (Civil Rights/Women's Rights/etc.) or worse (rampant spread of drug use, communist/socialist leanings) in affecting US foreign policy relating to war. This generation has been brought up to believe that basically all wars are bad/evil ploys by wealthy corporate America to exploit "poor" American soldiers and the poor abroad to increase their wealth- ie our involvement in Iraq is solely for oil (but why are we in Afghanistan too?). This generation was raised to accept more liberal, almost socialist, practices/tendencies than previous generations and to always "challenge/question" authority and "the establishment." This generation has now "come of age" and is the population that largely rules our country today politically and economically; most media sources and universities are dominated by liberals either from this generation or those influenced by them as well. Fueled by success in their anti-Viet Nam war campaign (I have to admit history seems to prove they were correct on the fact that Viet Nam really wasn't critical to American interests, preventing the spread of communism, etc.), their liberal values, etc. American society has really gotten to the point where we simply think we can "make love, not war" with all of our enemies and, furthermore, that the enemies our nation has our supposedly our fault due to perceived American "imperialistic" policies.
