You could ask ten people this and get ten different responses.
The latest reason is two Israeli soldiers were kidnapped by Hezbollah after crossing the border into Lebanon, when they were not supposed to. Hezbollah, thought normal prisoner exchange would be initiated, however Israel had been looking for a way to start another war with Lebanon since they withdrew a few years ago.

Because Israel can't live in peace with nobody...
It started because Israel send a few soldiers in Lebanon's territory and Hezbollah took 2 soldiers in custody and killed 3...So Israel attacked Lebanon, although they officially said that the war is against Hezbollah, not Lebanon to take the soldiers back...I kind of question this seeing how much they care now about the soldiers...
And yotg stephanie is right, the soldiers were on Lebanese territory when they were captured by Hezbollah...it was not Hezbollah who crossed the border into Israel...

Israel foolishly pulled out of Lebanon on the assumption that the Hisb'Allah terrorists would not be permitted to re-arm and to return to their positions in southern Lebanon. Unfortunately, the United Nations once again double-crossed Israel and did not enforce UN Resolution 1701, which would have kept the terrorists where they were at the time of the cease fire. Meanwhile, arms continue to flow from Iran via Syria to the Hisb'Allah, unchecked by the Lebanese army and by UNIFIL, in violation of the UN resolution.

Israel will have to fight another war there sometime soon to protect the civilians living in northern Israel.

The reason for the conflict between Israel and the Arabs is that the Arabs, plain and simple, refuse to accept a Jewish state in their midst. They invented this whole idea of a "Palestinian people who deserve a state" just to use as a tool to dismember Israel.

Prior to partition, Palestinian Arabs did not view themselves as having a separate identity. When the First Congress of Muslim-Christian Associations met in Jerusalem in February 1919 to choose Palestinian representatives for the Paris Peace Conference, the following resolution was adopted:

"We consider Palestine as part of Arab Syria, as it has never been separated from it at any time. We are connected with it by national, religious, linguistic, natural, economic and geographical bonds.

"There is no such country as Palestine! 'Palestine' is a term the Zionists invented! There is no Palestine in the Bible. Our country was for centuries part of Syria."
- Auni Bey Abdul-Hadi, a local Arab leader, to the Peel Commission, 1937

As to how to solve the problem, the only way would be for Israel to have an overwhelming defeat of the Arabs and then dictate the terms for peace. Otherwise, the Arabs will never stop trying to destroy Israel.

stephanieloveswater, love, recheck your information.

The soldiers (three, not two) were kidnapped in Israel's legitimate territories, not in Lebanon.
A "normal" prisoner exchange was out of the question for many reasons, and in a way this event was the last straw for Israel.

Don't rewrite history.
