also why is it easier to calculate a 25% tip than a tip that is 23%?

Because it is easier to calculate the tip on a round number than it is to calculate on a decimal number 10% of $80 is 8 dollars. 25% of $80 is $20. These result in even numbers which are easier to calculate than odd or irrational numbers and can be done most of the time without thinking. Finding 23% of $80 requires a little bit of thought and does not come out evenly in whole dollars. Most people don't like to deal with change.

Because it's easier to calculate 15 or 20% of a round number like $80 than $77.46. 20% especially because it is just dividing by five. And it's easier to calculate 25% because that's just dividing by 4.

Because it's simpler to divide percentages when you're confronted with even numbers in factors of 10. It's easier to calculate 25% than 23% becuase 25% is a 4th of 100.

Easier to calculate, and you can do it in your head. It is easily calculable that 15% of $80 is $12, or that 25% is $20. It would be unnecessarily stuffy to use your four-banger to figure out a tip.

first of all the tip should be calculated from the amount of the meal without the tax... so deduct the tax and then if you want to round up, do so. And when did tips go from 15-20% to 23-25%?? yikes!

Because 25% can be expressed as 1/4 whereas 23% is 23/100 and much harder to calculate in the head.

less numbers = easier to compute

You can't figure this out? It is called estimating and you should have learned it in middle school, it is always easier to use whole numbers and easier percentages (1/4, 1/2, 3/4) your brain is able to do the computations much faster.

Unless you are a math genius who can quickly multiple 77.36 * .23 in two seconds flat.

It just makes it easier to calculate the tip in your head.

Most people don't. If so you are highly skilled in math, blessed with a natural ability. Don't lord it over others. They won't want to hang around with you.
