my family just purchased a tree for Christmas, and we heard that puting aspirin in the water will prolong the tree's life... is this true? are there any other techniques other than this? is this even true?

All you need to do is keep water in the tree stand. Nurserymen and horticulturists do not recommend adding sugar or other additives to the water. Turns out that plain old water is the best.
If you have a whole house humidifier, make sure it is operating. Low indoor humidity will tend to dry a tree out faster than a humid environment.

Good luck with your christmas tree.

I've never heard of aspirin but you are suppose to cut the bottom to have a fresh cut and make sure the water doesn't run out. Don't put it near a furnace duct where it's exposed to hot dry air. That's about it. My trees usually last til I'm ready to take them down. When picking out a tree grab a branch and pull down along the branch. If a lot of needles fall off, look for another tree. The needles should be soft and pliable not hard and brittle and falling off.

Always have water in it. Never let it dry because the tree will develop a sap cap so it can not drink water. This is like sufficating. Keep it in a cool shady place. Always have a galon of water in it. No do not put aspirin in the water. Spray the tree with antisperant, before you trim it. If it develops a sap cap cut 1 inch of the bottom of the trunk. Keep it away from heaters and vents

Yeah Asprin works to allow better water flow in the trunk. Make sure it always has water and keep it out of direct sunlight or complete shade.
