Hi there. You have opened a real good debate here! I find that the most similar to "Dark Tower" in texture and style would be David Gemmell. Leaving aside Tolkein, whch is a "must read" but not necessarily now, I would most suggest specifically for yourself Guy Gavriel Kay - a Song for Arbonne, then Tigana. I think you would love the second riftwar trilogy by Raymond Feist (Daughter, Servant, mistress of the Empire) but you would need to read the first trilogy to get there (Magician, Silverthorn, Darkness at Sethanon). The first trilogy is passably good, but the second is the real good stuff - other Feist I wouldn't recommend. Other folks have given a tremendous list, hard to go wrong (mostly - steer clear of Gormenghast for now, though). My personal favourite is The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson, but this is much heavier than "Dark Tower".
Good luck, Steve.

The Rift war saga-Reymond E Feist
The Belgriad, The Mallorean, The Elenium and The Tamuli-David Eddings
The Black Magician Trilogy-Trudi Canavan.
David Gemmel is quite good as well but Feist, Eddings and Canavan are by far the best!
Happy reading
Amy

If you like a little comedy thrown in as well then definitely all the Terry Pratchett books. The Riftwar series by Raymond E Feist is also classic fantasy. Anne McCaffrey's dragon series, and she also writes great sci-fi. Terry Brooks, Janny Wurts, and I can't remember the author but I just read 'Temeraire' - also about dragons and bizarrely the Napoleonic wars - and it was very good. But the king has to be Tolkein.

Try any of David Eddings books, the Belgariad and Malloreon series are great, or theres Raymond E Feist his Riftwar saga is awesome. There are so much out great fantasy books it would be hard to mention them all, but heres some ive read.
Tracy Canavan - Black Magician Triology
Weiss & Hickman - Dragonlance
Patricia Kenneally Morrison - The Keltiad series
and of course the books I mentioned above. They are my favourites but then again everyones tastes vary. Good Luck and enjoy whatever book you find.

David Eddings a must. Phillip Pullman 'His Dark Materials' trilogy excellent although kids book. Really try David Eddings though, fantasy gone epic with the Mallorean and the Belgariad. great involved characters and backgrounds, really tight plots and detailed history.

The Belgariad series - David Eddings - maybe not quite dark tower but pretty good fantasy anyway. Pullman's ok but not great.
Can't go wrong with Frank Herbert.
