I have a bird feeder and squirrels are constantly eating from it and they're starting to look a bit fat. Is this normal for squirrels during the winter? My big question is, should I leave the bird feeder out there so they can eat and stay warm or should I take it away so they aren't to slow to run away from predators?

You could purchase a squirrel-proof birdfeeder from smithandhawken.com or dealtime.com, or discourage the squirrels from eating the birdfood by mixing capsaicin in with the bird seed to repel squirrels from eating the seed and attatch feeders on posts six feet from the ground and at least 10 feet away from any nearby branches or structures.

Also, check out www.icwdm.org/Prevention/birdfeeders.asp if none of this helps.

Good luck and happy holidays!

Have a heart and leave it. Get a squirrel proof birdfeeder
if it bothers you too much.

I have mine hanging from a wire down from a branch of a tree.

They have not figured it out in the last two winters!
