well first question, i dont think they have been that much by advertising, my parents are very "country" and set in their ways, advertising for the most part to them, is "new fangeled ideas",, my daughter was raised as a free thinker,,, im not sure much effects her,,,but i think for most people , ads do socialize them,, what they see is what they become to think is how it should be,,,
now as to gender, yes,, i wrote a research paper on the gender bias even in good childrens television programs, and the ads often follow with the program,,,,,, girls sit back, or take care of others,, boys do the action,,,,, in ads, even if its a woman doing the action, the voice over has often been male,,,,,
did you know that winnie the pooh is actually gender biased? kanga is really the only recognized female in it, (some arent sure what piglet is) and she sits back and observes, is a caretaker

Advertising has capitalized on the traditional roles of the 1950's for a very long time now. Advertisers utilize those 'traditional roles' because they are the simplest ways of communicating their message to the viewing public in context. As current society has changed, and gender roles have expanded there has been minimal change in the message structure which Advertisers use to communicate these social expansions of roles.
Although, they are present in advertising, the roles still embraced for gender in advertising are centered chiefly in traditional displays. If you notice the depictions of men in some advertisements, they're shown as ineffective when confronted with tasks which are traditionally women's tasks. Case in point, Air Freshener commercials where they man is trying to 'freshen' the house through some silly method and suddenly the woman arrives with this thrilling product to save the day.

It influences alot and nobody who lives in the western world can excape it. DRiving down the road there is an advertisement of a sexy woman driving a sports car, a superman figure promoting sunglasses, a muscle bulging guy promoting a high fibre bread, children having fun in the park with their family eating hamburgers. All thse advertisements sugest taht if you use this product your life will be fuller. On TV a lady talks about playing with her baby with a special toy - it sugests taht if you want to be a good parent and have fun and educate your child you too need that toy. Sublimal messages are being processed by brains all over the world and nobody can excape the impact. Get a nissan four wheel drive it has room for the family to move. But at myers there is more choice. Go to coles its cheaper. Eat at this particular restraunt for a good time. where these shoes for healthy feet. The messengers are constantly being processed.

Some of my friends are but not the majority, that is friends off line, not to sure on the % of those on the net.
Me definatly not influenced by cleaning adds, lol, hate anything domestic, that is a have to do job and not something anyone in there right mind does otherwise, I would employ someone for that if I could afford to,lol. Got much better things I could do.
Adds do not have much effect on me, but then if I was wealthy they might have, lol.

I find that I often have a negative response to advertising, particularly with accompanying music that I find uncomfortable (strident / discordant).
Also, 'sickly' American female voices that accompany 'beauty products' are nauseating, and the 'macho' voices that come with film trailers.
And, I get real PRICKLY about the those adds where the 'background music' is not ~ and I can't hear what's being said ~ and it's not just adverts that I find this happening.

Cleaning adverts always have women in them if they do contain men they are affeminate men. This must have an affect on socializing us it sends out a message that women should look after the house. How many Barbie adverts do you see with boys playing with them? Why do perfume adverts always have people in love writhing around together - it's saying wear this and you'll find the partner of your dreams (and we all fall for it!) Hope this helps...

Coke is it! damn it, every time I see an advert for Coca-Cola, I feel the NEED to get some, it has become more than a want. shamelessly hooked in to the marketing. We are Pavlovs Dogs at the end of the day, and conditioning over time makes us victims to the thoughts of others...

The one's that really crack me up are the ads for underwear - why are they targetted toward men looking at them? and why do they always use nearly nude females draped over the bonnet in car shows? examples are just everywhere, makes me see red
