I'm thinking of changing my computer but have heard that it is not enough to erase programmes as the next owner can find all my private information. so how do I wipe all the programmes off it and leave with a clean sheet. Or would it be safer to take a sledge hammer to it?

Yep, what the first guy said. When you delete programs, they are just marked as hidden and can be written over. What that program does is rewrite over your entire harddrive with random useless information so that none of the original info can be accessed. Go with dban.

If you are selling your computer, thoroughly clean your hard drive. Deleting files and reformatting is not enough. Reformatting does not overwrite every sector, and private information can remain retrievable. Use a secure delete or disk wiping utility to overwrite every sector on all hard drives. Be sure to use a utility that supports the U.S. DoD standard of seven passes or wipes. While this method is good enough for most people, be aware that the only absolute way of destroying all traces of everything your hard drives is to have these disks degaussed (demagnetized) and physically destroyed.
Suggested: BCWipe, Evidence Eliminator, or SDelete.

You can always format the hard drive, it'll take a while, then reinstall Windows. During formatting all data is wiped and you'll be left with a blank disc. Reinstall Windows and the new owner will have a nice used computer, ready to go.

This free program will erase the info on your HD. Although, no program will remove the info completely, after using this program it requires the use of programs costing $1200 and above to extract your data from the disk. Hopefully you won't sell it to someone with that kind of money to spend.

Just remove your hard drive and drop it into a bucket of battery acid and leave for 24 hours, then remove gunk as best you can. Purchase new hard drive and sell comp!
