The first one would make a lot more sense to read first than the second one. You need to know the backgrounds of most of the characters. But don't worry, the first book is good! But if your one of those people that can pick up a story by reading the second one first, I say go for it!

Read the first one first. The second one will not ruin the first one, dont worry. You'll spend some time wanting to throw it across the room but it turns out well enough.
