Brown is the natural color of / dirty stained/unprocessed/ unbleached/ wood that has been mulched, pressed, and dried to form paper.

(Have you ever noticed that papyrus (hand made paper from the bible) is brownish colored. Of course papyrus was usually made from reeds which is another form of wood.)

We call the material cardboard, which was originally called corded board (Have you ever had cord roid pants, -- oh that's another story)

Anyway the bottom line is that brown paper is the cheapest, and brown boxes are the cheapest boxes, and that's why most boxes are brown.

When you are buying boxes in bulk, you can pay more and the paper company that make boxes will bleach the paper and give you white boxes. Or, for christmas or whatever you can pay even more and get the boxes in a variety of colors.

Because cardboard is a type of paper. Paper is made from trees. During the process it turns brown. It would be very expensive to bleach it out white so they just leave most boxes brown.

That is the natural color of the wood pulp used to make the card-board. Paper products (made from wood --if you didn't know) are died or bleached for particular color. Brown card-board is simply the most natural color after the processing of wood-pulp

They are made from unbleached paper fibres. When the tree is pulped, the pulp is bron. To get it white they need to bleach it, but that makes them less stong so they don't do it for boxes.
