I continue to hear married people saying how much happier they may be single. I hear the single people say how happy they may be if only they were married. And when they do get married , they want to go back to being single again. As far as I been informed I've seen the media put out these studies showing married people live longer than single people in general. The question may be what is "happy" to an individual. Therefore, if you happen to be over 40 and not married , you can explore and contrast all the pros and cons of being married and being single,. From that, you as an individual wiil be able to atleast measure this "happy" factor.

Why not, who decided in order to be happy at any age you have to be married, or that marriage is a precursor for happiness..? In fact, no body has ever made or will ever make an absolute definition for happiness. I understand many feels the need to belong or to be a part of some thing or some body in order to be happy, others using only their will power and imagination can create they own happiness out of any thing they wnat to.

Considering that your(?) happiness would be self-based, you'll be in control of your own destiny. You've got the priviledge of packing up spur of the moment, changing your mind, being fickle, eating macaroni and cheese for a week straight. You can find companionship in the mountains or with god/God/gods. You can mingle with friends, flirt with a handsome wise man with a little salt in his beard over a glass of wine. You could travel through Nepal and never come back. You Don't Have Anyone to Answer To.
But yourself. And your own satisfaction.

I've had 32 years of reasonably happy life since my marriage failed when I was around 34. I would rather be single. I'm extremely happy now.

Happiness must be found in one's self or a marriage will be horrible. So the answer is yes the "can" but it is really up to that person to decide to be so.

Well, I would guess not, unless you're counting singles in relationships but not legally marking married on tax forms.
Those who are not receiving the basic requirements of affectionate touch are likely to be very physiologically deprived, depressed, etc.
Those who are married at least have status, stability, and maybe even some hugs in between the rigamarole of life.
maybe more!
