US supported Saddam when Iraq and Iran were at war. Yes, we were responsible for much of his weapons; however, Saddam is solely responsible for the cruelty he placed on his own people.

yes and No. mostly no. While we did support him when he went against Iran (with chemical weapons) he has otherwise been solely responsible for what he did. The only other thing that the US government did was encourage the Kurds to revolt- it was going to be the first part of a UN operation, but that never went forward. Instead Saddam used leftover chemical weapons on them for revolting (weapons we had given him, no less)

So the US government has a little responsibility in that one, but they did not make the call to gas the Kurds. We just gave him the ability (inadvertently- those weapons were meant to used in the Iran -Iraq war) and the excuse.

We did not set Saddam up, but we have had a history of screwing up things in Iraq.

I can say he used to be a good freind of the US, and yes we helped put him in power, dont bash me, look the stuff up, he even got the keys to a few American Cities including Detroit.

I know I will get bashed for this also, but it is true, the same with Bin ladin, We fully supported him because we were using him to be terrorist against the USSR

Heck, dont kill the messenger

no, but as an anticommunist he was not considered an enemy.

the US HELPED Iran during the war between iran and Irak, remember the Iran-contra gate??

just as today, as an enemy of Iran and being moderate muslim (I mean religiously speaking) he should have been considered an asset against Iran.

but it was too much for the frozen brains of some in Washington.
they don't realize that the cold war is over, that radical islam is the real enemy, that saoudis and pakis are no longer "friends".

so the answer is that the us government removed him from power.......

There is no doubt that he was backed by the American government. The crimes he committed against his people are his own sin. The fact that we didn't immediately cry out against our support of his regime, is ours.
