As far as I know, the only difference would be the Lean-burn,carburation system which, would be on the 81 model, unless it was special ordered on the'78.There was problems with the LB when it first came out,but as far as motor block and head component's I'm pretty sure they all interchange, same thing with the 318,which in my opinion was a damn fine motor, run just as good as a 360,or even a 350 GM.But that's just me talking again.......

There is not a significant difference between these passenger car engines' major mechanical components. However, there are many important differences between the standard duty, two and four barrel, and heavy duty (high performance) four barrel versions. There are also some variance between the three major emission control packages: California, 49 state and Canada.

For example the heavy-duty engines have a lower compression ratio than the standard-duty, a windage tray and a double-roller timing chain. The California engines had a vacuum controlled manifold heat control valve and different exhaust systems. All the ignition computers and carburetors are tailored to the individual engine, emission package and model year.

Most of the 1978 engines were originally were outfitted with Chrysler's first generation ignition computer, "Electronic Lean Burn." The second generation ignition computer known as the "Electronic Spark Control" appeared on the '79-'81 cars. After more than 25 years, many of these rudimentary computers have ceased to process. The electronic ignition conversion packages from DaimlerChrysler's Mopar Performance division are a good replacement - actually better than original. Best wishes!

Yes in 78 they didn't know what caused oxides of nitrogen but new how to correct for it,retard valve timing,81 hey lets put an EGR valve on that will take care of NOX, 78's were gutless wonders 81's are alot better

They both probably had lean burn crap on them. Only difference I've found on mine is that the 81's carb has different parts inside. If it's normal everyday driving you won't have a problem. If it's extreme applications (racing, demo derby, etc. ) the 81 has plastic parts that'll melt inside.

yes anything pre 80 did not have a computer.so worse case is you will need to use from the intake up if you are switching motors
