Space pollution, or space debris, is basically things we threw up into orbit and left there. Spent rocket stages, dead satellites, fragments of failed probes; that kind of thing.

The problem is that these pieces of space junk are routinely traveling at over 17,000 miles per hour (27,000 kph). At that speed, even a paint chip could cause problems. The first confirmed case of such an incident was when the French spy satellite "Cerise" collided with the spent third stage of an Ariane rocket, causing severe damage to the spacecraft. More recently, a circuit board from a failed rocket launch hit the Space Shuttle Atlantis during it's mission to the ISS in September. At the moment it's not a huge problem, but if left unchecked, it could cause what is known as the Kessler Syndrome, in which low Earth orbit becomes so crowded with debris that it becomes nearly impossible to perform any sort of mission in space.

Space, as in outer space? Well, I know we leave junk up there, that's for sure. I guess Russia does too.

When we are done with the thing, we don't always bring it back again, I know that.
