I have to Drano my bathroom sink every few weeks because it drains so slowly. I don't know what the problem is! I'm pretty careful not to brush my hair over the sink, so there shouldn't be too much hair in the drain.

I've tried to take the stopper out to examine it, but I can't get it out and am worried that I'll break something if I force it. (It's the kind that's controlled by a knob behind the faucet that you lift up to close the drain and push down to open it.)

This is really bugging me. I can fix a toilet or a kitchen sink with no problem, but this monster is getting the best of me.

To clarify.. I live in a small, old apartment building, with kind of spotty maintenance. I'd rather deal with it myself than go through the hassle of having maintenance come in... but I don't have access to anything outside my apartment.

I really think "Dreamers" suggestion to use hot boiling water is worth a try. If you don't think it is hair, then it is probably either grease or an object. A lot of boiling water may move a grease plug out of there, plus it'd have another advantage of cleaning things up in case you need to remove the "P" trap as suggested by another suggester.

Personally I sure wouldn't call a plumber for a clogged pipe. That's a pretty expensive solution for finding a hot wheel car or something stuck in the trap.

If you remove the p trap just have a pan ready to catch the water.

You need to remove the p-trap and the stopper to start with. Since it is full of Drano, I would wear long gloves and face protection. Follow the linkage from the stopper knob down to where it ties into the drain line and unscrew it. Pull the linkage out and the stopper will come out. To remove the p-trap, loosen the two 1 1/4 or1 1/2 nuts and it will come off. If all of that is ok, then you need to snake the pipe going into the wall or floor.

There is a breather hole near the top of the rim, most likely near the faucet head, sometimes this gets clogged. Try squirting your Drano into that hole because if air isnt getting thru it doesnt allow the water to drain as fast. Also, if this doesnt fix your problem go to your nearest Menards and they have a drain cleaner called the Drain Opener most likely in a black bottle. This stuff stinks, but it will unclog any drain. If you use this drain opener be sure to follow the instructions on the bottle.

It sounds like the drain is plugged further down the line. There should be a clean out plug outside the house somewhere near the bathroom. Either in the wall nearer to the foundation,or depending how old your house is, it could be in the ground. Open the pipe up and run a hand held snake in it. If that does not work , you could have roots, or someother obstruction. It may be time to call Rooter Rotor.

if you live in a condo or apartment, call the maintenance man. If not, call a plumber.
