At this point, I think he is making the right decision. If in fact something happened to him, you would find someone else eventually and move on with your life. I think he is just honoring his mother and means no disrespect toward you.

They say the way to pick a man is to see how he treats his mother, looks like you have a pretty good guy....

The wife is legally next of kin, but you aren't his wife yet. For him to tell you now that his mother will always be his next of kin, even after you're married, is a red flag. After marriage you should always come first, even though he will always love his mom.

Giving you the flag would be the right thing to do. If the flag goes to his mother and not you, what would others think? You are next of kin no matter what. Would you get his life insurance or would that also go to his mother? You should go and talk to his mother (your mother inlaw). If his mom is cool about you getting the flag over her, she should/would tell her son. If she still feels that she should get the flag, dump that sorry *** and move on. He has not left the nest and never will. Love hurts but that would hurt a ton more if you got nothing. Just a thought.

Until you are married he is right to make his mom the next of kin but, after you are married you have the right to be claimed as next of kin. You also have the right to fight for benefit he may get after your married if he dies. Even the flag.

I would let him list whoever he wants it to be since it is his thing to decide. Marriages come and go but moms are forever. You are a FIANCE not a wife. You will be considered next of kin upon marriage anyway. Leave his paperwork alone bu make sure you are aware of his wishes.

You're not married yet. When you're married maybe a different story - why are you stressing about a damn flag anyway? That's kind of morbid since you only get the "flag" if he dies! Grow up and marry him for him, not a damn flag.
