the 8gb ipod nano says it holds up to 2000 songs. My 6gb mp3 player says that it holds up to 3000 songs. Why does the ipod have a bigger hard drive but it holds less songs?

A 6G ipod holds about 1500 Songs:

An 8 G iPod holds about 2000 Songs:

So I guess if it does have a bigger hard drive it does hold more songs! Hope this changes the confusion!! :)

The song volumes provided are estimated. It depends on the sound quality of the file. You can put more near CD-quality songs (128kbps) on a player than CD quality songs (192kbps). The iPod uses AAC format which is slightly larger than MP3 and WMA formats. Again, just depends on sound quality of a track.

The # of songs rating is based on an average file size for the songs. For an apples to apples comparison you need to figure the capacity based on the same file size.

If you look at the fine print of the iPod product information on apple.com you will see...

Song capacity based on 4 minutes per song and 128-Kbps AAC encoding; actual capacity varies by content. 1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.

It's the way in which each player stores the songs. iPods store them in a way that each song takes up more space than they would on other MP3 players.
