Surprisingly, not Harry Nilsson who had a #1 hit with it in 1971.
The song was written a year earlier on Welsh band Badfinger's album 'No Dice'. The song was originally named 'If it's Love' but band members Pete Ham and Tom Evans who were the songwriting band members, thought the verse was not strong enough. They re-wrote it and the resulting track on the final draft for the album was 'Without You'.

Big Andy is indeed right. Pete Ham and Tom Evans of Badfinger co-wrote the song and recorded it for their "No Dice" album in 1970.

Both Ham and Evans were beset by legal problems over royalties throughout Badfinger's career and both took their own lives by hanging, Ham in 1975 and Evans in 1983.

I agree with Wildamber. Harry Nilsson wrote it and recorded it. Massive hit. Not impressed with M.C. and her painful gyrations and hair grabbing as she squeezes the notes out!! Bit like Leona
