Lineage II! If you like awesome graphics, PvP and more, try L2. Try some of the private servers (where you don't have to pay to play) L2 has the most awesome graphics ever, you can download movies from its official sites to check out the game play at www.lineage2.com

For a list of l2 private servers, go to: http://www.gamesites200.com/lineage2/

(you have to pay to play L2 on official server, but private servers are free)

Guild Wars (in my opinion) is the best. You only have to pay a one time fee (unlike World Of Warcraft) plus, their decorations are great. Keep in mind, you'll have to spend a lot of time downloading updates for just about any online game. If the game can't connect, you can't play. Make sure you have some regular games on your computer as well. If your internet connection breaks, you can't play the game. Every game has it's strengths and weaknesses. Just pick the game that fits your specifications, computer, and budget. Good luck! Runescape is the only game I know of where you don't have to download, though.

The most popular MMO currently would seem to be World of Warcraft. It's having an expansion due out in January, so expect to see quite a few new players in that Month. Lots of new players = a good time to start an MMO.

The old standards EQ and EQ2 are still running. I wouldn't start playing SWG right now, as I don't believe it has much life left.

For non-fantasy based, you might try Eve Online, a spaceflight based trading and PVP MMO.

Google Flyff.

edit: Or find a private Ragnarok Online Server and play on that. It's free, or pay to play with a public Ragnarok Online Server.
