He wanted to get to China, so he went along the well used trade routes between China and Western Asia/Eastern Europe. This route is ofter referred to as the Silk Road, as silk was the major Chinese export

The route he took was the silk road, a well used collection of routes from the west to the east. Why not use the same road as the merchants?
