It seems odd that after several years of rapidly increasing display resolution being standard that we should stay for so long with one, especially since much higher resolutions are available, even on LCDs.

Right around the time 1024x768 became the standard there were a large number of new internet users who bought monitors (and there are still monitors being sold today that are 1024x768 -- 17" lcds, laptops, projectors) so it's standard because the vast majority of internet users have 1024x768. It became the standard because the number of people with 800x600 became a very small percentage such that it became more useful for most people to have the higher resolution at a cost of scrolling for the few people with 800x600. When the vast majority of people have 1280x1024, it will become the standard

That's just the recommended resolution for a 19" monitor. Depend on the size of your monitor you can get a higher resolution, but your graphic card must be able to run at that resolution too.The only standard is that any monitor/tv need to have at least 1280x720 ( or 1024x768 Pc resolution) in order to be called High Definition.
