I'm very interested in making a career of teaching English abroad in schools etc. But I'd like to know more information like what qualifications I need etc

But more specifically I'd like to teach in Portugal & since I have a British passport I'd like to know if I need anything like social security number or anything like that.

Your help is much appreciated folks

To teach in a private language school (for-profit) you would need a Bachelor's degree and a TEFL certificate. In Europe, the biggest name in TEFL is the CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults). A Bachelor's degree is not a legal requirement for Portugal, but it's almost essential to be competitive in the job market (especially if you don't have prior experience).

To work in a public school you would need an undergraduate degree and teaching certification (either a PGCE or a B.Ed, depending on where you're from). It would help to have some experience working with ESL learners in a public school environment.

To work in a university you would need an undergraduate degree and a Master's degree in either TESOL or Applied Linguistics. Experience working at the university level would also help, of course.

If you're looking into for-profit schools, check the first link. I would apply to an IH school before any other, personally. I would also suggest doing your CELTA in Portugal, as you'll have more opportunities to network and you'll be available for any immediate job openings. Inlingua (third link) or other similar schools like Berlitz would not be my first choice, but Inlingua often has openings in Porto.

unless you are looking at teaching english as a foreign language, in that case you would need to look at gaining a tefal qual.
check out www.tes.co.uk it's where all teaching jobs are advertised
