I have to eat at a really nice restaurant for the first time in my life. I'm talking about the kind where there are utensils on both sides of the plates and the waiter puts the linen in your lap for you. I do not want to embarrass myself or the people I am eating with. I'd appreciate any help.

just use common sense for the most part. Be polite to the other people at your table and the wait staff. Don't talk about anything gross or off-color at the table, chew with your mouth closed and start with the fork that is furthest from the plate and move in...(first little fork is for the salad, big fork is for dinner, second little fork is for dessert....same idea with spoons....1st one for soup, 2nd for dinner and so on) If you have to go to the bathroom, just excuse yourself you don't have to say where you are going. You will be fine!

I have problems with this myself...I'm not a fancy person.

Use your utensils from the outside in.
Do not put your elbows on the table.
Do not eat until everyone has been served.
Don't do anything like blow your nose at the table. Excuse yourself.
Put your napkin on your lap.
Don't reach across the table for things. Ask people to pass them to you.
Of course, say please and thank you!
If you get a palate cleanser between courses (which is usually a small scoop of green sherbet), take one bite and no more.
Tip well.

I hope that helps!

just be calm, and don't be afriad to tell that you don't knwo which utensils are for what. (you could look on google and found out which are for which, but anyway keep your napkin in your lap, wipe your mouth, don't make yourself the center of attention the entire conversation let everyone speak, make eye contact, smile, don't slurp, sit up straight, don't tap your fork or spoon, pass the food before you take yours make sure everyone has everything. INViTE ME ! LOL is it for a school function? goodluck

I go out to eat all the time.
NEVER use your hands, use your utensils.
ALWAYS tell the waiter thank you, when you ask for something, wether its a napkin, or a cup, ........ and say please before you ask for something.
Whenever you leave, to go to the bathroom or something say may I be excused, and tuck in your chair.
ALWAYS have a napkin on your lap.
Chew with your mouth closed.
NEVER put your elbows on the table.
And last but not least, be yourself, and don't worry! Have fun, live a little, your at a resturant, to have fun!
Good Luck! Hope I helped!

If there is a host or hostess, watch him or her - the utensils are used from the outside in - Sometimes the utensils are delivered with the dish. Relax, it's not a test, it's dining.

Be cool and just watch what others are doing and take your time. You can copy them just like "Jack" on the Titanic does.

Take your cue from the people you are with. Do what they do. Just don't spit on the floor and eat with your knife.
