Question for Teachers. Why did you opt to get a Master's Degree? If you don't have it yet, is it a good idea to get one? Why?

That's it? More money? Not for self-improvement or to be able to learn new materials?

Yes, you do make more money but most teachers get a master's degree to further their education and maybe extend into another job in education. Some do it to get out of the classroom-ie asst. principal, etc Some also just love learning for learning's sake.

Why WOULDN'T more money be at the top of our list? Getting your Masters requires time and dedication, so obviously an incentive for putting all that in is money. If you're not already in it (teaching) for the joy of learning and improving yourself, you're in the wrong profession anyway. Self-improvement and knowledge should be implied reasons for getting higher education.

PS- I haven't gotten mine yet, but I'm still considered a "new" teacher. I plan to go for my masters, doctorate, and become nationally certified in the future (distant future- I'd like to start a family first).

Higher salary. Where I live, you'll earn back the cost of your Master's in about two years. However, schools are reluctant to hire teachers with Master's degrees and no work experience.
