because the surprise and fun of tearing the wrap open and seeing the gift... ooooooooohhh. visual appeal

but i think its a waste if you know the person is someone who will just rip up the paper. i nicely wrap all my gifts for my family, because they are kinda gentil with their presents. i put my friends' gifts in a nice bag since they are rougher.

I don't care if it's wrapped! As long as the present is good (hehe) I'm okay with it... Plus, the wrapping is just more trouble because I have to take it off...
Okay, enough of being selfish. I think it's meant to make it look good and I think it just adds more thought. Like, "Hey, I bought you a present. I decided to gift wrap it too. That's how much I like you."
Ha ha... :-)

It's for the surprise effect. People like the anticipation of surprise as the open the gift, and givers like to see the surprise on the receivers face as they open the gift.

If everything is wrapped, you can have them out and under the tree for weeks and nobody knows what they are. It lends to the mystery.

It's the anticipation on what's in the wrapping.

Good Question. It's so that if you see a box, you don't know if it's crappy or not, so oyu can't chuck it at someone
