Yes they need light, as all fish need a night and day cycle to feel comfortable. However, they don't need direct light. If they are near a window or an overhead light or a lamp, that would be fine.

Your fish will be okay in a 1 gallon tank without an airpump for a little while, but not very long. If you do not move your fish to something bigger (even 10 gallons would be a good improvement, but eventually each fish will need 20+ gallons) they will be stunted and die.

It's good that you're cleaning out their tanks every day, that is vital to keeping them alive in such small tanks, but they still need ample room to swim and grow and be healthy.

If you have a calico fantail in a 1 gallon tank, get it out NOW. Goldfish don't belong in bows/small containers, they need at least 10 gallons per fish, and that's for small ones.

The problem with small tanks is not only that they need daily cleanings, but there is NOT enough oxygen and room and even an aerator would not help. Fish growth is stunted when they don't have enough space, and they eventually die.

And, yes, all fish need light..
