I'm an American who started following the Premier League. Can someone explain the league championship and cups to me? I think the ultimate prize is the regular season standings leader. Right? And there is no playoffs at the end of the season like American sports, right? Is the FA cup the 2nd most valued prize? What about the Carling cup or other cups? I know Man Utd plays their reserves for some of the cup games. Why? Is it because the cup doesn't matter so much, and they want to rest their players? Is it because they assume their reserves are good enough to win? Also, are the teams chosen to the Champions League based on the season standings?

Here for the additional infos:
There are 20 clubs and each club plays the others twice, once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents for a total of 38 games for each club, and a total of 380 games in a Premier League season. The bottom 3 will be relegated to Championship League at the end of the season.

The top two clubs directly entering the Champions League's group phase while 3rd and 4th entering the competition at the third qualifying round and must win a two-legged knockout tie in order to enter the group phase.

If the FA Cup champions and runners-up both finish in the top five of the Premier League, the FA Cup's UEFA Cup spot goes to the sixth placed team in the League. If the League Cup is won by a team that has already qualified for Europe, the League Cup's UEFA Cup spot also goes to the next highest placed team in the League.

About the reserves teams, as I know each clubs have reserves team that also have their own competitions. This reserves team could consist of youth players that are prepared if some of the first team are injuried for a period of time. The reserves team can also consist of senior players that did not get a chance to play in first team. For example few weeks ago in the Liverpool reserves team's match, Jersey Dudek played as the Goalie and Fowler as the forward. Usually this to help and guide the youth player to play side by side with their seniors though not the in the Premiership official matches.

I think if the reserves playing in some cups not because the cup didn't matter but to prepare the youth is suddenly they are needed. It's a lot of better exercise than sitting down in the bench all the time isn't it and doing nothing.

Here's the scoop from an American living north of London. There are four football leagues and numerous conferences full of teams. The Premiership is the pinnacle. The top two teams are guaranteed entrance into the following year's Champion's League. The third and fourth teams have to play into the CL. Three more teams go into the UEFA Cup.
The bottom three teams in the Premiership are relagated to the Coca Cola Championship. The top two teams in the Championship automatically are promoted to the Premiership. Numbers three, four, five and six playoff for the final promotion place. The lower leagues and Conferences all have similar promotion/relagation rules. There, clear as mud?

Pretty much answered your own question,, 38 games ,3pts -win 1pt draw highest pts afer 38 wins, Champ lge = top 4 from previous season, FA cup is seen as best because no seedings ,All teams just pulled out of hat, Top teams think they play too many games so prioritise, thats why lge cup tends to be 3rd so teams rest better players for FA cup, Champ lge & Premiership
