According to Gibbon's "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," it helped wreck the Roman Empire, so I don't see why it couldn't happen again.

It certainly doesn't help, but I think there are enough sane people in the U.S. who will (and are) get sick of all of the Fundamentalist B.S., especially in the political realm.

Yes it did help wreck both the Western and Eastern oman Empires. The reason was the fanatical peacenik attitudes spread by the Christian churches at that time. Just imagine- Constantinople in 1453- a city of almost 500 000- was defended by 7 thousand men! To make things funnier, the locals despised them, because not only they were mostly mercenaries and catholics, but moreover made a living out of war- which the locals considered undignified and barbaric.
To answer your question- if the US falls, it will be due to fanatical peacenik ideology. This is nowadays however linked with the so-called "liberal" ideology. Sure enough, there are some half brained religious people too, but most proponents of this suicidal ideology are atheists and (self annointed) "liberals".
IMO- your current crop of Dems just might fit the bill. It should not worry me- as I'm not an USian- but if the US falls, so will my country.

I don't see how. The way I count it, there are a few fanatic Christians and a lot of fanatic leftist secularists. I'd worry more about the latter, but I have confidence that our system of government and a lot of reasonable people acting reasonably will keep us going quite nicely, thank you very much.

Maybe.
I'm a Christian, but I realize that anything fanatical can bring down an nation/empire, whether it be with religion or politics, or whatever. So, you're right.

No. The US constitution prevents it. For a Christian sect to do that legally it would have to change, most would not go beyond the limits of the law and there are too many liberals anyway.

No. Conspiracy theorists who believe things like the U.S. planned 9-11 will bring down the U.S.
