Probably Samhain or Halloween; it is a pagan festival of the new year and eternal life and transcendence. It was also the last harvest. Anglo Saxons called the festival "the need for fire festival" and would light huge bonfires and torches and walk through the town. The Irish believed that passed loved ones would transform into cats, ghosts, and goblins which is where the concept of dressing up for Halloween probably came from. The Scottish would carve faces into turnips which became the modern day jack-o-lantern pumpkins.
