Personal preference and possibly the health of your child. I fed my children for 2 days and 6 wks respectively and they were fine. I also had a sister that quit when hers teethed. I had another sister fed until her's were over 2 1/2. I personally feel upto 1 yr because after a yr the baby should be getting most of their nutrients from table food and should be using a cup. But night feedings probably ok...like I already stated...personal preference.

As long as you continue to put the child to the breast, your body will continue to make milk. It can be weeks, months or years.
The AAP recommends "Breastfeeding should be continued for at least the first year of life and beyond for as long as mutually desired by mother and child" and goes on to say "There is no upper limit to the duration of breastfeeding and no evidence of psychologic or developmental harm from breastfeeding into the third year of life or longer."

After the first 6 - 8 months, mothers who breast feed do it purely for themselves. The baby gets no more benefit from it than they do from a bottle of formula.
If a mother breast feeds a year or more, that is just gross & it is DEFINATELY JUST FOR THE MOTHER!!!

As long as you and you baby are comfortable doing so.I breast fed my first son only for a few moths as I had complications and my youngest until around 16 months. It really is up to you.

It is best to breastfeed for 2 years, because up til then they still benefit from the breastmilk. Otherwise you can breastfeed as long as you want as long as you have milk.
