Is it just the software I am using which came with the computer - "Toshiba disk creator" - or is there an incompatibility between the two, such that anything copied on to DVD-R can be copied only to another DVD-R?

If your DVD burner says "DVD+/-R" Then you can burn both. But, if it only says "DVD-R" then you cannot burn "+" disks.

Look at the symbol between DVD R or DVD RW, the minus - and the plus + mean they are different formats and will not copy one to the other.
So you need to use Minus - disks for your Toshiba.

you may desire to study the variety of your dvd tension. to have the potential to record on the two varieties, you may desire to have a dvd+-r tension. in case you purely have the dvd+r tension you are able to not record on a -r disc. i'm uncertain the version between the two kinds of dvd.
