It depends on the size of tank you want. I would suggest a pair of Neolamprologus Brevis - they are little shelldwelling cichlids they are fine in a 10gallon tank - just provide lots of shells, and they will breed very easily. They are super cute.
Otherwise, just tour your petstore and write down the fish you like, then come home and research them to make sure that you can properly care for them.

Good luck :) I'm sure you will find fishkeeping is a very rewarding experience.
Before you start your tank, here is some good reading for you:

Just go into a store that has a lot of fish and ask people that work with the fish which ones are easy maintenance and then pick out the one you think is the cutest! ; )

relies upon on what you're in seek of and what you desire to spend. Betas are very fantastically fish which could stay in a 5 gallon tank with a clear out and heater. Fancy goldfish are cute yet want a 30+ gallon tank (please, for the sake of your puppy, seem this information up your self in case you do not have faith me), i think of bumblebee gobies and pea puffers are cute yet they're too small for some people. on the extreme end of the size peacock grudgeons and splashing gouramis are very super. some people think of Oscars are cute. They even have reliable personalities yet you could want a seventy 5 gallon tank purely for one.

I'd say a beta. They can come in different colors and some have more then 1 color to them. The males have the bigger fins and, in my opinion, are a lot cuter.
