I've had a tropical community tank for 6 mths now. yesterday i noticed that one of my adult guppies had a kink in its back, like it's tail had gotten heavy. now today she's almost vertical and swimming quite awkwardly. my other fish all seem fine. is there anything i can do?

I've done some other research on the internet and come to the conclusion that its probably a combination of old age and weak genes (due in interbreeding). i thought about euthanasia but i'm just going to leave it be. who knows, it might recover! it's still got a healthy appetite, i'm doing regular water changes and none of the other fish are affected. thank you for all the responses.

That does not sound right... she sound sick to me, but I'm not sure what could have caused the kink. Guppies can be very weak fish, becuse of all the inbreeding which has occured to get their bright colours.
You might want to invest in a Master Testing Kit, to see if you have any problems with your water such as ammonia, nitrites, pH or chlorine.

This sounds like a genetic problem to me, it generally occurs when you breed guppy`s that are closely related. Put some new blood in your tank. This is quite a common problem with guppy`s.

I'd tend to agree with bill g, but it may be a swim bladder problem, consult the pet shop you buy your fish from

she could be pregnant and ready to drop.isolate her from the other fish because guppys are live bearers and if she gives birth they will eat the babes.if is not the case then she has a disease so unfortunately you will have to terminate her.
