Each animal species usually has some longer-term strategy other than day-to-day sleeping and eating, so "longer-term" is not anything specific. Bears hibernate, some animals migrate, some estivate, some enter a state of torpor, some just keeping on doing what they do - all of these could be considered longer-term strategies. Estivation looks the term that best describes the type of dormancy described in your quotation.
