I have used a web site called www.duotrope.com. It has hundreds of online and print publications, their deadlines, guidelines, acceptance stats and whether the pay or not, etc available.

Research a publication you are interested in. Read a lot of what they have already printed. Follow the guidelines, read the copy rights policies very carefully. I know that it is exciting to think about getting paid for your writing, but until you get a few publications under your belt, just getting it into print should be your first goal.

Getting a book deal, especially for poetry, I think is pretty difficult if you don't have some work already in print.

I just had my second story published in an online magazine. It took a lot of work and a LOT of Patience. Editors are VERY slow at responding.

There is always lulu.com, Depending on your opinion of self-publishing and self-marketing. If you are out-going and can sell yourself, this can be the way to go. Just walking your book around to art galleries, coffee shops and independent bookstores can be a lot of fun. I once bought a book from a self-published writer who set up a table at Barnes and Noble store in Seattle. Remember the "Chicken soup for the Soul" books are all self-published. Self-publishing does not mean "not good".

The most important thing to do is keep writing.
Good luck,

Go to your library and you can find a directory of publishers. It also will tell you what type of writing these publishers are interested in printing. It lists the addresses where you can submit your manuscript. When you find one that is suitable for your writing, just send it off with a covering letter. GOOD LUCK>

Get Poet's Market. I have last year's edition, and it really helps when looking for publishers. But keep in mind, many publishers look for thematic anthologies, if you are writing a book, and many magazines are thematic as well.

You can publish yourself. http://www.lulu.com.
I recommend this site so often, people might suspect I work for them, but I don't. I just think they've come up with a winning idea.
