how do i start to like numbers?

I'm not sure if there's a way to make yourself like numbers.

I love them, but that may be my personality. While I was okay with my Calculus classes and Linear Algebra, I really got off on the Number Theory class. What we learned in that class was not entirely practical, but it was fascinating.

I have an idea on how you can at least make yourself more comfortable with numbers; maybe it'll lead to like. Go play some number games. Sit down and work out some things. Look for patterns.

For example, there is a puzzle (also used in Die Hard With a Vengeance) where you figure out how to get four gallons of water with a three-gallon jug and a five-gallon jug. This can be represented by:
3x + 5y = 4
x = the number of times you fill up the three-gallon jug
y = the number of times you fill up the five-gallon jug
One solution for this is x = 3, y = -1.
This means you fill the three-gallon jug once and dump it in the five-gallon jug. You fill the three-gallon jug again and dump all you can into the five-gallon jug (leaving one gallon). You empty the five-gallon jug and pour the remaining gallon into the five-gallon jug. You then fill the three-gallon jug again, giving you four gallons of water.

This works for most numbers, such as 2x + 7y = 5 and 19x + 24y = 45. Play around with those numbers. Try to find examples where this doesn't work or is trivial (hint: see what happens when some of the numbers are factors of another number).

Those are an example of a Diophantine equation. I did my Senior Paper on them. Interesting stuff (if you like Number Theory).
