When searching for the historical beginning of the first Christmas tree, one must go very deep into the past. Just like Santa Claus one finds that the first Christmas tree was combination of many different facts, legends and customs all starting in the Baltic countries and what is now Northern Germany. The first documented use of an evergreen tree in a Christmas celebration was in Riga, Latvia, in the year 1510 according to many sources.

It was used in Europe as part of the pagan Winter Solstice festival of fertility and rebirth (Dec. 20-23). This was later absorbed and warped by early Christians into the Christmas celebration; however, most religious scholars know that Jesus was born in the Spring, probably around April. This "Christmas tree" is usually said to have originated in Germany along with many other traditional Christmas traditions of greenery, ornamentation, and Saint Nicholas which when said quickly in a German accent sounds like Santa Claus.
