Every woman is different but if the pain starts in your back but comes around front, its a contraction. If they dont hurt or arent coming in mormal intervals then they are probably braxton hicks - which is your body's way of getting ready for the real thing. If they start hurting and coming at regular intervals and don't stop when you change your activity level (try laying on your left side and drinking some water or juice) then I'd say it would be time to give your OB a call.

First of all no such thing as dumb questions. Yes you can have contractions in your back....it is called back labor -and when that happens and you go into full blown labor I suggest that you pack a tennis ball in your bag to the hospital
You will probably have back labor during the birthing process. If you lay on your side, have your partner apply the tennis ball on your back and massage, applying slight pressure, this will help with the pain. Good luck!

They are probably braxton hicks.

You can get back labor, especially if you're baby is sitting in a strange position
I felt my contractions in my back and hips, while i was pushing because my babies head was pressing on my hip bone.

If they sometimes hurt, there is a good chance that they are braxton hicks and just preparing your body for the real thing!

Good Luck!

If the pain/contractions start coming closer together, head for the hospital and call the doctor.

Yes!! But this may also be Braxton-Hicks. Try relaxation techniques (mine was a hot bath) and if they go away than they're not the real deal. I was all by myself (my husband first child too) with no family/woman support. I was really nervous about knowing if it was the real deal. You'll know...Good luck!!!

Yes, sometimes called back labor. I had back labor when induced with #1, actually more painful than just normal labor. You should at least call your Doc. Best wishes!

Walk around , see if they get worse or better. Lay down, left side , drink water, see if they change any. If they get worse or regular, then you might just be in labour. Good Luck!
