Well. I think that it depends on your goals. Are you there for exersize? You burn 9 calories per minute when you swim. Thats not much now, but if you swim 1 hour a day. Thats 60 x 9, you get 530 calories a day. Plus, swimming works virtually every muscle, its a cardio work out also.

#1: depends on the level of competition, and #2: depends on the size of the pool.
I'm in high school myself right now and on the swim team. Right around now (at the end of week 1) we're doing 5,000 yards or about 200 laps a day in a 25 yard pool (100 laps a day in a 50 yard pool). That's 1,000 yards per week, 1,200 if you also do Saturdays as well.
It'll also depend on your own workout needs. If you do it just for the workout I'd say do 3,000-4,000 yards a day. Make up a workout on a sheet and take it with you to use as a reference. This is what almost all high schools do these days for there own workouts and the times speak for themselves: an average of 54.6 seconds at state open levels for 100 freeestyle, 1:01.2 for 100 backstroke, 22.3 for 50 freestyle and there's more incredible results. But don't be fooled by these times, these times are achieved by people who've probably been swimming their whole lives or for a good part of them and swim 6,000 yards or more in a single day on crazy times. Keep your expectations real and don't go crazy over it all.
