On a very cold night in North Dakota, the temperature reached a record low for that date. By morning the temperature had risen 15 degrees, but was still 8 degrees below zero. Write a verbal model, labels, and an equation to find the record low temperature the night before.

Lango2005, I knew schools were lowering their standards, but if you're in honors math and you think the difference between -7 and -8 is 15, this country is screwed. You are as polite as you are intelligent, and you are making a fool of yourself by calling those of us who got the correct answer "stupid". Let me try to explain this so even you can understand it:

The temperature this morning is -8.Last night, the temperature was 15 degrees colder.

Therefore, last night the temperature was -8 - 15. This can also be written as -8 + -15, or as -(8 + 15). Either way, the answer is -23 degrees.

The verbal model is probably something like "It's -8 degrees, and last night it was 15 degrees colder, so it must have been -23 degrees last night." The equation is definitely "T = -8 - 15". I don't really understand what the question meant by labels.

Excuse me Ms lango2005 but you should probably turn in your honors certificate in math and take a class is class. There is no reason to insulting and the answer is -23!

If the record low x raised 15 and -8 is the end result.

x + 15 = -8
-15 = -15
x = -23
you are adding two negative integers together not subtracting so you don't change the signs. If you add 15 degrees to -7 you get a positive integer of 8.

-7 + 15 = 8 whiich is the same as 15- 7 = 8

-23 + 15 = -8

x= -8-15
x= the low temperature

You know that the low temperature is 15 degrees below the morning temperature as stated in the question. Since the morning temperature is -8 degrees, then the low temperature must be -8-15 or -23 degrees

Verbal Model:

record low temperature + temperature risen = real temperature

Labels:

Record low temperature= n
Temperature risen= 15 degrees
Real temperature= 8 degrees

Equation=

n+15=18

Answer:
n= 18-15
which is n is 3.

So, the record low temperature of the night before was 3 degrees.

Hope I helped!

Holy crap, I cannot believe some of the answers you're getting here, Monica.

I don't have anything to contribute except to verify that the answer is indeed -23 and that the formula can written as x + 15 = -8. I'm not telling you anything new.

But if you are confused about the answers you are receiving, I'll point out the following:

Lango2005 is flat-out wrong and is trying to bully you into accepting her answer. If you look at her best answers, her success rate is 6%, and NONE of her best answers are in Mathematics. Her honors math class has some very low standards indeed.

Akshay verma has the right formula, but he put in 18 instead of -8. Mistakes do happen, but he knows how to reach the answer. Replace his 18 with -8, and you'll see that Akshay agrees with everyone else.

Amy F has a success rate of 14%. If you look at her best answers, you'll see six of them in Mathematics on the first page alone. Odds are good that Amy knows what she's talking about (and as a math graduate myself, I can say that I know Amy knows what she's talking about).

So, nothing new to contribute, but it can be difficult to sift out fact from crap in Mathematics.

Besides, you can always test it yourself. Add 15 to -23. You get -8. If you add 15 to -7, then you get 8, which is not what your question has.

since -8 is the current temp and the temp has risen 15 degrees to get to that point, -8 + (-15) will give you the record low, in this case, -23 degrees

X + 15 = -8
X = -8 -15
X = -23
where X is your record low temperature.

x is the record low
it went up 15 degrees to equal -8

x+15=-8

The low was... -23.
