There are many branches of physics, just like there are many branches of medicine. No matter what your branch is, a physicist tried to understand why nature is the way it is and hopfully come up with the simplest set of equasions that will accurately predict what we see. The cutting edge of physics is probably high energy physics. These are the guys working on neuclear physics. They are trying to understand, at the most basic level, what are matter and energy made of and why do they behave the way they do. They also seek to understand the forces of natue and come up with a single theory that will describe electricity, magnitism, the weak force and gravity. Einstien spent the last 30 years of his life trying to do this but failed. The latest greatest theory they hope will accomplish this is String Theory.

Physics is the study of energy and and how it is transfered between molecules/space. physicists come up with really complex mathematical formulas to study all this. it's rather complicated and boring.
