Worse than death is not being able to develop a goal and a burning desire in life! Human being is the highest manifestation in the cosmic life cycle. It is only as a human being one can gain enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and reach the stage of salvation (moksha).
Gaining enlightenment and finally salvation is no less an achievement. It can be achieved only after having crossed 8.4 million manifestations and a total life cycle of 96.4 million earthly years. Having manifested as a human being... how is it that human beings while away their life without having a fixed goal in life... a burning purpose... something that makes the present life more enjoyable and livable.
It is this power of discrimination that differentiates a king from a laborer (power of discrimination is almost absent in insects, plants and animals... all the lower forms through which all human beings have already passed). Where lay the difference? The difference is only in the mental prowess. The capacity to think... and think wisely is the onus of every human being... a birthright in fact!
Human beings do not manifest the form of a human being just to live for money. Money has never been the goal of wise people... it is only a means to an end! Materialistic gains no doubt are necessary to live a happy life but it is not the end of life as we see it today. The wanton desires not only within children but also adults’ presents a precarious situation world over.
Life is to be found beyond the mundane affairs of life. How many times has one climbed the Mount Everest, surfed beyond the capacity into the high seas, sat by a lonely brook in the high mountains with the Love of your life! Very few in the world are truly lucky to do that! It is these wise men who have finally taken their destiny under control.
Why worry of death which is immanent... it will come one day as it comes to all! As we have the day and night, fire and water we also have life and death... both being different sides of the same coin. Why weep over the inscrutable will of the Creator, the Almighty God who created us all!
Let us resolve to develop a burning desire... a goal of life which leads us towards the passion of our life... something we really enjoy doing! It is then we shall truly manifest our destiny and finally overcome the fear of death! More on burning desire here- http://www.vijaykumar.com/burning_desire.html

Death is an absolute truth. For some they accept it, and for some its terrifying to even think of death. No one knows whether there is pain, or pleasure in death. No one woke up to tell us about it, right ?
Worse than death - I could think of a hundred things. A life without purpose, having accomplished absolutely nothing in life, A person who is in coma indefinitely, someone said here 'rape victims', yes, those who underwent something crueller than death and could not get justice, people tortured, people suffering from diseases like alzhiemers, parkinsons etc., Aids sufferers, People who have nothing to hope for, or live for and who may be totally handicapped mentally or physically (But even such people think of 'hope' and live each day better than yesterday), People who see their loved ones dying, or their entire family wiped away in a war, famine, or any sort of calamities. There are so many different forms of ''suffering'' that could be worse than death. And thats the beauty of it. Each suffering can only be best explained by the individual who has gone through it, for him/her that would be the worst than another person who may define their own suffering as worse than death.

As I see it, death isn't that bad as long as you lived your life to the fullest and have no regrets. The only thing worse than death is dieing without being happy and wish you did more or made different choices in life. As long as you die happy and fufilled, it's a good ending.

Living in a body that you have no control over, that you just exist. You have to rely on other people just for helping you with your normal bodily functions. Having to be fed through a tube because you can't eat or drink.
To me, that would be worse than death,
TO JUST EXIST, SITTING OR LAYING THERE.

You would have to experience death before you could properly answer. I would think the way you die, would be the worse part of the process, there are so many horrible ways to die. Fear, is the greatest thing used against mankind, having our imaginations, it lives in all. Having the one you love and cherish die in your arms would be a terrible way to go on alone.

Being on a boat 20 miles out in the english channel, with a force 6 blowing and 15ft swells. Throwing your guts up and thinking your going to die, then after a few hours realizing that you've got to face the trip back and your not going to die.

death gets such a bad rep.
there's nothing bad about death; we only fear death because we're so accustomed to life, and can't imagine existing in any other state but the current one we find ourselves in.
we worry about leaving and missing the people and things that we love on earth, but there is no leaving or missing to be done in the first place. time is infinite, and the ending of one life does not mean the obliteration of one's existence as a whole.

Extinction. Also continual, unrelenting pain.
Death is graduation day. There's more to come, and it will be much more interesting.
