Basically, they need your approval under data protection to ask your doctor, but do they have a right to ask this on an application form before even seeing you. Does it contravine your basic rights?

Depends on the job?
Yes they do because if you operate machinery it would be a crucial thing to know.
Also because if they do a drug test there's an explaination.
OH i would state ask in person or leave it blank. Until you have thier reasons.

They can ask you. They cannot base it on a determining factor for hiring you or not for medical reasons. Some jobs have restrictions for operation of machineary that would prevent someone that is on narcotic medications from operating. As for basic health risk, common medications should not be a problem. If you have nothing to hide it should not be a factor.

No it doesn`t contraveine your rights.most employers do ask this question due to health and safety factors. you can refuse to answer but if you have an accident at work due to prescribed medicines you wouldn`t be able to claim.
If you thing about it , it`s a pretty sensible precaution when it comes down to safety in an industrial environment,for instance would you want to hire a driver that is on a drug that could cause drowsiness, I know I wouldn`t.

Medical questions can only be asked if they relate directly to the job being offered.

yep i feel it does but some companys actually go deeper they make there employers take monthly urine tests its kind of rare but happens .sadly if you want the job they can odviously impose this other wisetheyll just say you odviously dont want the job.i would tell them to poke it .

I have seen that on applications before and I have put no because unless it will effect my work habits, its none of their business.
