My cramps are actually so bad that I can't move until I get a large dose of ibuprofen in me. Even after that I still feel really uncomfortable and nauseous and like I can't do anything. Any tips on how to make menstrual cramps less painful?

You are on the right track with the ibuprofin. The best thing to do is start taking the ibuprofin 2-3 days before you expect your bleeding to begin and continue until the bleeding stops. You can take up to 2400mg/ day which can be broken down into doses of 600mg every 4 hours. DO NOT take more than 1000mg at a single time or take this on an empty stomach. The hormones released in your body around this time make your bowels move enough, taking too much ibuprofin at one time can really exacerbate this. Also warm packs on your abdomen may give you additional relief and they sell peel and stick ones at the drug store.

Take Pamprin or Midol instead of just ibuprofen. They have special ingredients that ease bloating and lower back pain.

Another important thing is to avoid sodium the week before your period and right when you start it. Things like chips, soda, frozen dinners and canned soup are especially high in it. Check labels to see how much you're getting, you might be surprised.

Oh yeah, and make sure to take the medicine with some food. Sometimes if I take advil on an empty stomach, it causes the nausea.

I also used to have SEVERE cramps, to the point where I couldn't walk or even stand. Nothing really worked for me (midol, ibuprofen, or exercise..considering I couldn't walk). I eventually went to the gynecologist and got on birth control. Tell your doctor all of your problems and he/she will be able to prescribe the right Pill for you. A lot of today's birth control pills are made specifically to target things like cramps and PMS. It's the only thing that has worked for me!

One of the best aids in getting rid of severe menstrual cramps is exercise...stretching will help you muscles by lessening the contractions caused by the excessive amount of hormones that are produced by your ovaries. You can still use ibuprofen...and it is acceptable to use acetaminophen as well. But go and see your doctor. He is the best person to ask about this.

Good luck!

It sounds like you are suffering from dysmenorrhea(severe cramping) try a heating pad. Exercise can help alleviate cramping and If nothing works you can go to your doctor for presciption drugs.

yes , see the doctor if its really becoming unbearable.
i find getting up and moving the best way to take my mind off of it.
diet is also important, make sure you're eating healthy, and have enough mineral/vitamin intake - iron is especially important when you're expecting your period. things will get better by the way as you get older.
