My home is heated with a gas heater, the front of it says Janitrol. Lately, the heater has been "starting" but not lighting. The far left blower gets really really red, and it makes the clicking noise, then all four burners light up for about 3 seconds, and then kicks off. However, I have found that if I stand behind the heater, and use a shirt or something to "fan" in air while it is lighting, it will stay lit. Can anyone please tell me why this is happening? The filter on it is new, so I hope that's not the case.
Also, each time it kicks on is a one and done deal. It heats up the whole house just fine, but then once it kicks off, it won't come back on on it's own. I have to repeat the fanning process time and time again.

You are correct, I'm not handy enough to do this. I'm just glad I found out where the damn heater was.

You must have a Sanitrol.
It's probably the thermocouple, which determines if there is enough heat present for the gas pump to operate. It's a great safety device, and is probably the most common thing to go out on a gas furnace. It's a twenty dollar item that you can replace quite easily.

I agree with John M. It sounds like a thermocouple problem. They are easy enough to replace, but ( with respect), you dont sound like you are handy enough to do this. I might call a heating repair person in.

Playing with fire... I'd called a heating guy/gal. (Hey, I am trying to be PC here)... I wouldn't mess with it, gas heater, a leak, or not burning it all... I don't think you wanna be on the evening news saying, I shouldda got that heater fixed weeks ago.
