You don't. An expiration date is not a suggestion, it's law. You should have it renewed before your birthday, or you will have to take the test again. They send you a renewal letter...how hard is it to follow the rules?

You have until the DMV closes on your birthday, because the next day it is expired and you can get a ticket if you are pulled over.

In CA there is no grace period. But unless you get caught by a cop, the only penalty is that you have to retake the test.
