Yeah I know the playstation 3 and Xbox360 are both out but I can't afford one! I know nothing about gaming, what are the greats?

If you don't know much about gaming, I suggest you visit IGN and GameStop, they both have ranked listings of the top rated games on all consoles including PS2. They include game summaries, screen shots, and more.

Mortal Kombat are classics since they've had games since PS1 but these are all good too:

Good choice man, the PS2 is awesome. Some of the "classic" games for the PS2:
James Bond: Nightfire
Ratchet and Clank (series)
Jak and Daxter (series, the latest excluded "daxter" from the title)
Grand Theft Auto (GTA III, GTA Vice CIty, and GTA San Andreas)
Need For Speed (any)
Gran Turismo 4
DDR (if you're into that)
Guitar Hero (2 just came out)

God of War. Ultimate gore fest!
Rachet and clank 2 - 4, 1 is not good. Get these if you like platforming.
Alundra 1. A PS1 game yes. A pretty rare game, yes. But ultimate game for puzzles.
